"At an altitude of 1,818 meters the third-highest point on the island of Madeira, at an atmospheric level where we find ourselves above the clouds, this magical moment of sunrise was recorded.
Among the rock structures of volcanic origin characterized on the island, we find the clouds that form the unique beauty of that moment, among these clouds we can see the most eastern tip of the island, Ponta de São Lourenço.

A funny fact is that whenever we are contemplating this photograph, we manage to be in the company of whoever was contemplating the moment live when that photo was taken."
The WMO CALENDAR COMPETITION is a global photography competition run by the World Meteorological Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for promoting international cooperation in atmospheric sciences, climatology, hydrology, and geophysics.
This competition, launched in 2014, has gained stature and recognition. This edition was the biggest and most successful ever, with over 1100 entries from all over the world.
A WMO jury selected 14 winners (including for the covers) and 12 honorable mentions, taking into account social media votes, technical and artistic merit, meteorological interest and geographical balance, thus ensuring that every region of the world is represented.
From the original photos, a shortlist of 60 images was selected, and published on WMO social media channels including Facebook and Instagram for WMO followers to vote for their favourites.
The final choice lay with the jury, which included a team from WMO's Strategic Communications Office, meteorologists and atmospheric scientists from WMO technical departments, the President of WMO's Services Commission, as well as photographers from the UN Office of Disaster Risk Reduction and UNICEF.
